Everyday
Materials are Fire Hazards. We
are surrounded by modern materials, often plastic based, which can
often ignite fast and burn well. Textiles can also burn
How can
the chemical industry make a contribution towards fire prevention?
Making Materials
Fireproof
Adding flame retardants to plastics and textiles makes them less
flammable. Use of less flammable and generally more expensive plastics
or inflammable materials could also be employed.
It is not only
sensible but essential where there is a high fire risk or devastating
consequences could occur, due to difficult or impossible escape
routes or where there are crowds to manage e.g. aeroplanes, ships,
hospitals, theatres, hotels
If it Stinks
or Explodes, it's Chemistry!
Thanks to great
efforts in work safety and environmental protection mean that it
rarely occurs.
The chemical
industry can prevent fires and help in extinguishing them: Flame
retardants extinguishing agents.
